Best Free Instagram Automation Tools in 2026 (Compared Honestly)

Almost every Instagram automation tool says it is free. The limits are what matter. Here is what each free plan actually gives you, and which one fits how you work.

Search for an Instagram automation tool and nearly every result says the same thing: start free. It sounds simple until you hit the limit. One tool stops at 25 contacts, another at a monthly count of messages, another turns out to be a trial that asks for a card.

This guide compares the free plans of four tools that Instagram sellers and creators actually use, and explains what each free plan can and cannot do. A quick disclosure first: we make Checkout DM, and it is listed first because this is our blog. We have tried to describe every tool fairly, including where the others are stronger than we are.

What “free” really means for Instagram automation

Before comparing tools, it helps to know the four ways a free plan can be limited. The limit decides whether a tool is genuinely usable or only a demo.

  • Contact limits. The tool counts how many different people you talk to in a month. When a post does well, this is the limit you hit first.
  • Message or automation limits. The tool counts every message or automation it runs, no matter who it is for.
  • Feature limits. The free plan works, but the useful parts, such as Story replies, follow-ups or AI, sit behind a paid plan.
  • Trials in disguise. Some tools call a time-limited trial a free plan. It is worth checking whether a card is required and what happens when the trial ends.

How we compared them

We looked at five things that decide whether a tool will still work for you in three months, not just on day one:

  1. The free plan limit. What stops you, and how soon.
  2. Whether it uses Instagram’s official login and API. This is a safety question first. A tool that asks for your Instagram password is one to avoid.
  3. Which triggers it supports. Comment-to-DM, Story replies and keyword replies.
  4. What it does after the first message. Collecting emails is one thing. Taking an order, payment and delivery address is another.
  5. What it costs when you outgrow the free plan. And how that cost scales as your audience grows.

1. Checkout DM: best for selling products inside Instagram DMs

Checkout DM is built for one job: turning an Instagram conversation into an order. A customer messages you, comments or replies to a Story, and the chat takes them from the product through choosing a size, adding to a cart, sharing their contact and delivery details and paying. The order then appears in a dashboard with returns and shipping tracking.

What the free plan includes: up to 5 products and 15 customer conversations a month, with payments by UPI, QR code or bank transfer (confirmed manually) or through Razorpay, Stripe or PayPal (confirmed automatically). That is enough to run a real sale and see how the flow feels. Paid plans start at $9 a month, and every paid plan has unlimited conversations. See the pricing page for the current plans.

Where it is limited: it works only with Instagram, so it will not help you with WhatsApp or SMS. Comment-to-DM starts on the Creator plan rather than the free one, and the free plan’s small product and conversation limits are designed for testing, not for a busy shop.

2. ManyChat: best for multi-channel automation

ManyChat is the best-known name in the category, and for good reason. It works across Instagram, Facebook Messenger and, on paid plans, other channels such as WhatsApp, and its flow builder can design almost any conversation.

What the free plan includes: according to ManyChat’s own pricing information, the Free plan covers 25 active contacts a month, one user, up to two connected channels and a small number of live automations. ManyChat cut its free tier from 1,000 contacts to 25 in March 2026, so older articles that mention 1,000 are out of date.

Where it is limited: pricing is based on active contacts, so the cost rises as your audience grows. And because it is a general chat-marketing tool, selling products is something you build with flows and integrations rather than something that comes ready to use.

3. InstantDM: best for flat-price comment-to-DM

InstantDM focuses on comment-to-DM and Story-reply automation for creators who want to send a link or capture an email when someone comments a keyword. Its paid plans are flat monthly prices with unlimited contacts rather than per-contact billing.

What the free plan includes: InstantDM advertises a free plan of about 500 automations a month, with a paid plan starting around $9.99 a month when billed yearly (about $12 billed monthly). Some comparison sites describe its free offer as a trial instead, so check its pricing page for the current terms.

Where it is limited: it is a lead-capture and link-delivery tool. It does not list a product catalog, cart, order dashboard or returns flow, so if you sell products you would handle those parts somewhere else.

4. ReplyRush: best for the highest free DM volume

ReplyRush covers Instagram and Facebook DM automation, including comment-to-DM on posts and Reels. Its main attraction is a generous free allowance.

What the free plan includes: it advertises a free plan of around 1,500 DMs a month, with paid tiers that increase the monthly DM allowance. According to other vendors’ comparison pages, its branding stays on messages on the free plan, so confirm that before you rely on it for a brand-sensitive business.

Where it is limited: like InstantDM, it is an automation tool for replies and lead capture. A catalog, cart and order management are not part of what it lists.

Other tools worth a look

Chatfuel and Inrō are two more names you will see in comparisons. Chatfuel is aimed at businesses that want AI-assisted conversations across several channels, and Inrō focuses on AI-led Instagram conversations. Their free plans and trial terms are described differently by different sources, so check their current pricing pages directly rather than relying on a summary.

How to choose

  • You sell products and want orders, payments and returns in one place: choose a tool built for DM checkout, such as Checkout DM.
  • You market across Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp: a multi-channel platform such as ManyChat gives you the widest reach.
  • You mostly send a link or capture emails when people comment: a flat-price comment-to-DM tool such as InstantDM or ReplyRush is simple and affordable.
  • You expect a post to go viral: check how the free and entry plans behave when volume jumps, because contact-based and message-based limits are what surprise people.

What free plans do not tell you

  • The bill when you grow. A tool that is free at 25 contacts and expensive at 2,500 behaves very differently from a flat monthly price.
  • Branding. Some free plans add the vendor’s name to your messages.
  • Instagram’s own limits. No tool can message people outside Instagram’s rules, such as the 24-hour messaging window, so be wary of any tool that promises to.
  • Where your data lives. Ask what happens to your contacts and orders if you leave.

A simple way to test before you commit

Pick one product or one offer, set it up on the free plan of the tool you are leaning towards, and run it for a week with real customers. Watch three things: did setup take less time than you expected, did customers finish the conversation, and did the limits get in your way. A week of real use tells you more than any comparison article, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Instagram automation tool?

It depends on what you want to automate. For selling products inside DMs, a tool built for DM checkout such as Checkout DM fits best. For multi-channel marketing, ManyChat is the broadest. For simple comment-to-DM link delivery, flat-price tools such as InstantDM or ReplyRush are popular.

Are free Instagram automation tools safe?

They are safe when they connect through Instagram's official login and never ask for your password. Check which permissions a tool requests and make sure you can remove its access yourself from your Instagram settings.

Do I need a paid plan to use comment-to-DM?

It depends on the tool. Some include comment-to-DM on the free plan, while others, including Checkout DM, make it available from a paid plan onward. Check the plan comparison before you build your setup around it.

Can I use two automation tools on the same Instagram account?

It is best to avoid running two tools that reply to the same messages or comments at once, because customers can receive duplicate or conflicting replies. If you switch tools, turn the old automations off before you turn the new ones on.
